Scientific and Technological Achievement - 2023

Dr. Rachid Deriche, originally from Thenia, Algeria, is an Emeritus Research Director at Inria, France's leading institution in Digital Science and Technology. With a career spanning over four decades, Deriche is a trailblazer in Mathematical Image Processing, 3D Computer Vision, and, more recently, Computational Neuroimaging and Brain Connectomics. He completed his engineering degree from École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications (now Télécom Paris) in 1979, followed by a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Université Paris-IX, Dauphine, in 1982, and his Habilitation from Université Nice-Sophia-Antipolis in 1991. Deriche’s early work laid crucial foundations in the field of 3D imaging and vision. His innovative use of differential, affine, and Riemannian geometries has been instrumental in solving complex problems in imaging and computer vision. His algorithms and models are widely adopted in academic and industrial settings, including in the special effects and film industry through the spin-off company RealViz. Shifting focus to computational neuroimaging in the early 2000s, Deriche significantly contributed to diffusion MRI and computational methods for mapping brain structure and function. He has leveraged AI and advanced mathematical techniques to explore white matter diseases and pre-surgical planning in neurosurgery. Over his career, Deriche has published more than 100 journal articles and 300 peer-reviewed conference papers, accumulating over 30,000 citations and a Google Scholar h-index of 79. Among his numerous accolades are the 2013 Grand Prize from the French Academy of Sciences in Computer Science, the 2016 ERC Advanced Grant for his CoBCoM research project, and the 2019 EURASIP Fellow honor. Recently, he was awarded the AI-Based Brain Connectomics Chair at Centre Inria d’Université Côte d’Azur and was elected as a Member of the Academia Europaea in 2023. Deriche's work has not only made significant academic contributions but has also garnered industrial applicability, making him a revered figure in both scientific and corporate sectors.
